New Series! CRC 1530 Coffee Break ☕

We are excited to introduce the CRC 1530 Coffee Break ☕, a new segment where we catch up with some of our consortium’s inspiring researchers over coffee. In each edition, we’ll talk about their journey, ideas, challenges, and motivations that drive their work, celebrating the diverse perspectives and backgrounds that enrich our scientific community.

We are kicking off with Dr Ruth Flümann, a Resident Specialist and Junior Group Leader at the Translational Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and Oncology (TRIO) at the University Hospital of Cologne.

Her academic and clinical training have uniquely positioned her to make valuable contributions to medicine and science, combining her love for patient interaction with a deep curiosity about the underlying causes of disease and a commitment to developing new therapeutic approaches. She approaches science with rigour and empathy, ensuring that every research question remains anchored in real patient needs. By bridging bench and bedside, she represents a new generation of physician-scientists who refuse to see discovery and care as separate worlds.

With this dual perspective, Ruth has first-hand experience navigating and overcoming societal expectations to be more accommodating and restrain herself to succeed. Drawing from this experience, she encourages female scientists to take up space confidently, listen to their intuition, and pursue their passions unapologetically.

Beyond her work in the lab and the hospital, Ruth values regular scientific exchange with colleagues. She emphasises the importance of fostering meaningful collaborations, a vision that strongly aligns with what makes our consortium more than just a network, but a true community.

In her free time, Ruth listens to motivating, science-focused podcasts, enjoys spending quality time with her family, and cannot resist a cappuccino! ☕

With a clear sense of purpose and a collaborative spirit, she is not only shaping her own path but also helping redefine what leadership in science can look like!
